Industrial Public Relations – need for it today

Introduction Industrial PR is changing today in a rapidly changing business environment today.  PM Modi is launching new industries and projects while Rahul Gandhi speaks on creating employment for youth.  AP CM Chandra Babu Naidu hosted US Business leader Bill Gates recently in his state and speaks of entrepreneurship to like-minded people. Industries can be divided into small industry medium industry and large industry as well as cottage industry.  Industries are essential in the economic growth of India as PM Modi starts several industries projects from time to time.

Industrial PR is doing public relations for industries.  In tough corporate environment today, corporate social responsibility occupies major attention, and community relations play leading roles.

Corporations are looked upon as neighbors, and it is the duty of the corporations to protect communities.  In the US during 1980s the Harrisburg Nuclear plant accident in Pennsylvania had happened and the community was against it.  The government stepped in to save the community from radiation leaks and great deal was done.  During 1980s the fire in ONGC Bombay high oil field happened and the corporation responded saying fire is a natural hazard and did good PR.  Ajit Gopal the PR Manager of the then Indian Airlines responded swiftly to an air crash of an Indian Airlines flight and it saved hassles for the government and airlines

Many such stories can be told on how industries look into public fears and apprehensions and respond to situations. Corporate social responsibility is a big work of industries now and they had to do it to continue in business. Business takes something from society, and it has to give something in return for its profits and this corporate social responsibility is the topic of discussion in business circles.

Industrial public relations involve press relations community relations lobbying dealer distributor relations and relations with all stake holders. Customers are to get good products at reasonable prices, and they should get good service if the product faults.  This should be the goal of customer relations.

Press relations for an industry to project good image and cultivate media to project good corporate image among audiences and carry out company’s promotion in a big way. Open house press conferences are needed as and when industry announces a new product or new scheme or some such.

Community relations activities are in need to project an industry as corporate citizen effectively among all and Hindustan Photo Films did community relations activities as early as 1987 in Ooty TN according to DGM Mr Seetha Ramaiah

Customer relation is to cultivate buyers for industry products and improve customer base and increase sales and market share informally.  Customers to get good quality products at optimum price and serve in a long run to an industry.

Industrial PR is to promote corporate image facilitate good customer relations be a good community citizen for industry and promote marketing sales and commercial interests on long run.  It is gaining momentum in India USA and other countries greatly.  Good industrial PR will create good industrial climate and pave way for smooth functioning of an industry on a profitable basis in long run and help employees to look at with pride and comfort and be a good corporate citizen in long run.
