Re-learning The Mindset Concept

Merriam Webster defines the mindset as ‘a mental attitude or inclination’ or ‘a fixed state of mind’.

When I started curating this column when ‘Reputation Today’ gave me the valuable opportunity of writing a column almost three years ago, I went into a deep spell of research. I spoke to over 150 top leaders and people who set the trend going in most domains and communities. The feedback was broad but the majority of these C suite leaders who responded resonated with the basic concept of mindset. Then I created my own simple definition of the mindset concept which was simple and straightforward- “Mindset is all about how your mind is set”

Then I rattled off over 180 articles, almost every week on Mondays. There was one differentiator in my articles which I still continue to follow. My articles or though expressions are not AI based but authentic, written from my heart and soul based on my three decades of multi domain and multi country experiences. I thought that for the benefit of my valued readers, this article would focus on re-visiting and re-learning about ‘The Mindset Concept’ as change is the only constant and even with the mindset concept, it needs to be reinvented to cope with change to continue to be an effective tool for positive change.

Demystifying Mindset

At its simplest, your mindset is the collection of beliefs, assumptions, and mental frameworks you use to interpret the world. It’s the lens through which you process every experience, every setback, every opportunity. And here’s what makes it so powerful: most of the time, you’re not even aware it’s operating. (Jodi Tossini)

Human beings develop their mindset through the experiences they go through in their lifetime. Even their smallest mistakes or learnings at a small age contribute towards their values and philosophies. Mindset is almost like a software that exists at the core of the brain of a person. Mindset controls your behaviour, approach to life and work and almost everything else. The environment you were brought up in, the community you grew up in and above all the values imparted to you by your parents, your friends all contribute towards the mindset you develop into.

The ingrown urge to learn, change and do better exists in every person. It starts from our very childhood, when we learn how to walk, then run. We spend so much time in our life educating ourselves as well as doing specialist studies. Since our mindset changes outcomes, we can evolve to a desired mindset easily and therefore get things going in the right direction. Take each success as a strength to build from. Take each failure as a learning lesson. Mindset change also helps us deal with setbacks and crisis situations more effectively.

There are multiple mindsets which can become your catalyst of positive change. Choose your mindset blend with caution and practicality of effective execution (Author)

Mindset is the strategy you choose of automatic response to approaches, situations and challenges. As with any strategy, you need to first do a detailed analysis of who you are, what your goals and ambitions are. The do a precise and near perfect gap analysis. You do need a mindset change buddy or even a group of people who help you to get this analysis right.

The it begins. You need to set your own change plan to effectively evolve to your chosen mindset blend and be convinced to be able to execute this plan properly. Start with a few basic steps, map reactions and keep at it. Its not easy but many have attempted mindset change and come out successful and have reaped its benefits.

Wish you every success!
